At first glance, Paul Smith's 1959 Fiat 1500 OSCA looks a little like a Fiat 124 Spider, the Italian roadster familiar to sports car enthusiasts. But wait a minute. The Fiat 124 didn't arrive until 1967, nearly a decade after the model year of this particular car. If this isn't a mass-produced 124, what exactly is it?

FOLLOW MARKET. In order to create a more sporty version of the 1200 Cabriolet, Fiat teamed up with OSCA, an Italian race car builder, to fit OSCA-tuned engines into the 1200 Cabriolet body. These variants were known as the 1500 / 1500 S cabriolet, and while related to the later 1500 Spider, are not considered to fall into the same family of cars.

This Fiat-OSCA 1500S features 'baby Ferrari' styling by Pinin Farina and is powered by an engine from the Maserati brothers' OSCA concern, and therefore combines the best of Italian design and engineering. Fully restored between 2013 and 2015, it is now in immaculate condition throughout.

The 1500S was introduced as the 1200 was deemed too underpowered for a sports car and Fiat needed something to compete with the English sports cars of the day, it ran until 1962 to be replaced by the 100hp 1600S, this initially had an asymetrical bonnet scoop but this was dropped a year later by lowering the engine by an inch to give the desired.

In July 1960 the name was changed to "Fiat 1500 S Cabriolet," and it now had disc brakes front and rear. About 1000 of the OSCA-engined 1500/1500 S models were built. Pininfarina assembled the 1500S and 1600S versions through the model's run, but the cars were always badged as Fiats.

The first FIAT models to receive the OSCA-derived engine were the 1500 coupé and cabriolet, which were first introduced in 1959. Maximum power was reduced from 125bhp to 80bhp, but that still meant a top speed of 105mph and a 0-60mph time of 10.6 seconds. Dunlop disc brakes were standard from 1960. In 1962 FIAT introduced the milder, overhead.

The OSCA engine displaced 1500 CC's and was quite a bit more powerful than the standard 1200 CC unit. Ultimately, Fiat started its own production of the OSCA engine and in 1960 renamed this sportscar the Fiat 1500 S Cabriolet.

The 1500 was understood to be an OSCA engine until 1964, when Fiat introduced its own 1,500cc engine (upgraded from 1,100cc); from then on, the older machines were referred to as 1500 OSCAs. Naturally, Fiat's new pushrod 1,500cc engine appeared in the Spider as well.
